Dear Soulseekers,

It’s definitely no secret that mental health issues are on the rise, but maybe you aren’t aware of the increase in our young population. Here are some facts from the World Health Organization:

  • One in six people are aged 10-19 years.
  • Mental health conditions account for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10-19 years.
  • Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age but most cases are undetected and untreated
  • Globally, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.
  • Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds.
  • The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.

It’s alarming isn’t it? But the good news is that awareness is on the rise and with 2021, more programs will be available to young people. New opportunities for kids and teens to seek healthy alternatives and begin practicing self care should start popping up early in 2021. “Barbie Wellness” is already available. Headspace is partnering with Sesame Street and Snapchat to help fund a new sleep app for kids from the developer and CEO of Calm. With online school and separation from friends and social gatherings, kids are feeling the strain, and they pick up on stressors from the adults in their lives as well. As the pandemic continues, more and more programs and services will become available online from counseling and therapy to meditation and yoga. It doesn’t matter what your age is, self care is vital!

Keep in mind that it’s important to keep the lines of communication open. Let kids know that it’s ok to feel anxious or worried or sad or angry. These are scary and uncertain times. We need to talk about it and seek help when we need it. Feeling stressed or overwhelmed? Take some deep breaths, calm your mind with a meditation app. I like Calm. It has so many options depending on what your needs are. Sometimes I like a guided meditation. Sometimes I like to listen to music or the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. It’s so relaxing. Try several different things and find what works for you.

Need a break from all things digital? Get outside. I just started a new job and the majority of it is online. I spend my whole day on my laptop, and by 4 pm, the last thing I want to do is get on an app or my phone so that I can unwind and relax. Today I went for a walk after work. It was drizzling and 42 degrees, but with each step down the street, I could feel the tension leaving my neck and shoulders and forehead. The fresh cold air was revitalizing and my mind was utterly blank as I strolled the streets of my neighborhood. By the time I returned home, I was ready to start dinner and visit with my kids. It’s my meditation. So don’t get locked into a certain idea that meditation can only look one way. Again, it’s what works for you. So experiment and keep trying until you find the one thing that nourishes your soul and replenishes your spirit. The time that you invest in yourself is the best way to spend your time. You deserve it. Believe it.
