beating the odds

Dear Soulseekers,

We need to discuss a serious issue today. One that has hit really close to home this past month. One of my dearest friends suffered a major heart attack, the Widowmaker, a month ago, and thanks to her quick thinking and with the help of some pretty amazing EMTs, doctors, and nurses, she is still here. It’s dang scary y’all. She’s in her late 40’s. She does have a family history, but I’m wondering if many of you are like me? Heart disease is not at the top of my list of things to worry about. I feel like cancer is a bigger concern. But do you know that heart disease is the number 1 cause of death of women? It’s 1 in 5 of us ladies! So we should be very aware and actively working to prevent it. High blood pressure, high bad cholesterol, and smoking are our biggest risk factors. Where are you with these 3 things? I’m good on all three right now, and I have never smoked.

What about these?

  • Diabetes
  • Having overweight or obesity
  • Eating an unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Drinking too much alcohol

These also increase your risk for a heart attack and heart disease, and how many of us are guilty of these? I know I eat unhealthy at times, and I also drink alcohol. I do stay pretty active. Working out is a priority for me because both of my parents have high BP, but I’m not overweight nor do I have diabetes. So 2 out of 5 risk factors for me. I can do better. I’m giving up the alcohol. I’d rather give that up than chocolate! And I can cut back on eating out or just make healthier choices when we do go out. It’s really about lifestyle changes isn’t it? Those changes can be hard to make. It’s going to require consistency and determination. But after my friend’s experience, I think it’s totally worth it. I still have a lot of life left to live and kids to parent. I’m not done traveling and experiencing life! My friend died 3 times during this experience, and each time the doctors were able to revive her and save her life. 3 times! She’s so lucky to be here.

Please, please take care of yourself. Do whatever it takes to stop smoking or lose weight. You’re going to need help, and it’s not going to be easy. But the world wants and needs you here. Your family and friends need you here. Life is already short enough as it is. Take full advantage of the time that you do have. Don’t let it be cut short.

Reach out my friends and get the support that you need. Take care of your heart!
